December has been a lot of different things over the years.
At NAHLA, for example, this spell between Thanksgiving and the New Year is our busiest. So, for the past 24 years, December has meant pushing past limits to varying levels of reasonableness. Sometimes that’s driving across town in holiday rush hour to get a package to the UPS hub so it makes the flight to Hong Kong. Or, it’s what you thought was a quick phone order becoming a two-hour therapy session with a customer going through a divorce. It turns out making holistic skincare is as much about taking care of people as it is about taking care of their skin.
But this year, more than any other before it, has been about surrender. Surrender of plans. Surrender of expectations. Surrender of judgements too. In fact, this month has required me to let go on a level so completely foreign to me that just typing these words, telling you how pared down the world has become by necessity, feels like showing my ass to the whole auditorium. Vulnerable. Scary. Uncomfortable.
