When Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of Winter this year, I didn’t pay much attention. I’ve never put much faith in weather predicting rodents.

Instead, Spring arrived early – the salt marshes that surround my home shifting from a frozen hush to saltwater sparkles. As our field filled again with the migrating geese, I turned on one of my favorite songs and watched their muddy prodding while I tapped my feet to the beat. Spring, it’s official.

I’m not sure I’ve ever craved a Spring more in my life. I’ve spent this Winter birthing and nursing and nurturing a new life and it has been a magical little bubble for our family to live within the confines of. But now? I’m ready for newness and light. The bursting of buds and muddy walks in the woods with the baby. To dust and sweep away every last cobweb in the house. Wild nettle pesto and a cold pint of beer enjoyed on a sunny patio. My desire for movement and freshness is insatiable.

In my quest to become one with the salt marshes, I was reminded of an old remedy for the bridge between Winter and Spring. I cooked up a pot, tossing the still-warm grains with homemade ghee and a pinch of salt, and proceeded to make happy little animal sounds as I ate it. This is what I’d been looking for.
